    The Cheney High gymnastics team finished fifth with 129.35 points at its last regular 3A Greater Spokane League meet, Jan. 20. According to head coach Jaelyn Gardner, Cheney was competing against both 3A and 4A schools in what was an "intense environment." Alexis Miller was the only Cheney gymnast to finish in the top 10 of any event.

"We knew it was a tough environment to go into," head coach Brad Rasmussen said, referring to the Clarkston dual.

    At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Cheney City Council approved a three-year contract between the city and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1919 chapter; giving Cheney firefighters pay increases and making changes to language in the previous contract. The new contract, which runs through 2018, provides firefighters a 1.5 percent base salary increase this year.

Despite a curve ball tossed at them from Mother Nature in the form of over 20 inches of snow, and a couple of stints of bitterly cold Arctic weather, the expansion of Cheney's Holiday Inn Express is on target for a March completion and an April opening.
