    The council approved a request from the Public Works Department to apply for funding from three grant programs run through the Spokane Regional Transportation Commission : the Surface Transportation Block Grant program, the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program and the STBG Set-Aside Program. According to a city staff report, the SRTC anticipates awarding $16 million in STBG funds, $10 million in CMAQ funds and $2 million in STBG Set-Aside funding.

    Duane Lawrence Gillingham, a lifelong resident of Cheney, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 7, 2018 at the age of 57. Duane was an outstanding football player at Cheney High School. He taught himself how to play guitar and he enjoyed writing music.

    The offense rolled up 398 yards and the defense had seven passes broken up and a pair of interceptions to highlight the Eastern Washington University football team's first full scrimmage of the spring on Friday at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash. With a trio of quarterbacks passing for 286 yards and scrambling for another 51, the offense had 398 yards in the 70-play session in rainy conditions.

    Cheney pole vaulter Erin Clark was another top local finisher for Eastern Washington University at last Saturday's 46th annual Pelluer Invitational track meet staged at Roos Field. Clark is the first student-athlete in Pelluer history on the women's side to be crowned the pole vault champion three times in their career following her 12 foot, 8 3/4 inch effort.

    Junior Thomas Baycroft represented Cheney High School well at the Palouse Ridge Invitational on April 12 by tying for first overall as an individual, with Jack Plaster from Gonzaga Prep with 72 strokes. As a team, Cheney ended the tournament with 390 strokes and placed 19th out of 26. Gonzaga Prep took first overall with a 309.

    The Cheney High School boys soccer team went into another shootout against Great Northern League Clarkston on Tuesday, April 3. The Blackhawks eventually lost by a slim 4-3 margin in the shootout, handing them a 3-2 loss. Cheney falls to 2-7 overall record and is 1-5 in league play.
