    CHARLTON – Hiring additional staff to reduce class sizes in the elementary schools is first among four priorities identified for the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District this fall. Superintendent of Schools Gregg J. Desto kicked off the annual series of budget deliberations Wednesday with an educational vision for fiscal 2018, which begins July 1. In a presentation to the school committee, Mr. Desto said the areas of emphasis for this fall include maintaining the smaller class sizes achieved this year in Grades 1 and 2; hiring two to four teachers to reduce class sizes in Grades 3 and 4, and hiring one or two adjustment counselors to meet students' social-emotional and mental health needs.

In October 2015, Casella announced that probable human carcinogen 1,4-dioxane and other toxins were detected in 21 residential wells in Charlton's nearby H Foote Road neighborhood.

    Roughly a year after emergency road reconstruction was completed along a dangerous section of Route 20, the state Department of Transportation is developing plans for a $50 million project to extend safety improvements farther along the highway.     A Charlton Memorial Hospital physician implanted what Southcoast Health is calling the "world's smallest pacemaker," becoming the first hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island to do the procedure, Southcoast officials announced Dec. 1. According to Southcoast, its physicians elected to use the Medtronic Micra Transcatheter Pacing System because unlike traditional pacemakers, the device does not require cardiac wires or a surgical pocket under the skin to deliver a pacing therapy.

    CHARLTON – A zoning enforcement officer for the town has ordered Casella Waste Systems and the town of Southbridge to cease and desist all landfill operations on Charlton land. In a Nov. 25 letter to Casella and Southbridge, alternate Zoning Enforcement Officer Fredrick J. Lonardo wrote, “I hereby order you to immediately cease and desist use of the site for storm water collection as part of the landfill, and to make only such use of the site as is allowed by the Charlton zoning bylaw.” H Foote Road resident John Jordan, on behalf of local citizens' action group CleanWells, filed a complaint of a zoning violation in May. The complaint alleged the two basins in Charlton are prohibited on the land zoned for agriculture.
