    United Bankshares Inc. , which acquired Arlington-based Virginia Commerce Bank for $527 million in stock last year, reported an increase in loans and deposits and said assets topped $12 billion last quarter. United Bank's parent company had first-quarter net income of $34.6 million, or 50 cents per share, compared with $30.1 million, or 48 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.
