    The crash occurred around 4:50 p.m. Sunday, just north of Malvern on U.S. Highway 34. The Iowa State Patrol says a westbound car collided in the eastbound lane with an eastbound minivan. The patrol says the minivan driver died in the crash.

    A 54-year-old white woman is charged with a hate crime for allegedly using a racial epithet against a black man in eastern Illinois. The Mattoon Journal-Gazette and Times-Courier reports Diana C. Yamamoto appeared in court Thursday and an attorney was appointed to represent her.
