    The varsity Newberry High School basketball teams started 2015 off on a sour note as they were swept Friday by Chapin High School in games played at Richland County's Spring Hill High School. The ladies' game never saw one team build any kind of huge lead over the other as the Lady Eagles led by a lone basket after each quarter, including at the final buzzer, 53-50.

    For 10 years the Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County Inc. has provided medical assistance to those in Newberry County who cannot afford insurance and do not qualify for government programs. "When the clinic got started in 2004, the only free clinic in the state that we knew of was in Hilton Head," said Pamela Branton, executive director of the clinic.

    The Chapin American Legion Post 193 Inc. was in charge of the burial program for 13 veterans from around South Carolina on Oct. 30. After briefing the route to some 40 motorcycles riders and 35 others, the procession being led by Richland Sheriff's Department departed at 9:50 a.m. headed to Fort Jackson National Cemetery for a 10:30 a.m. burial ceremony. There were eight Army veterans - Stephen Brodie, Ralph Greene, Stephen Brill, William Perry, Charles Garner Jr., Gary Hayes, Thomas Jones Jr. and Wilbur Strong; two Navy veterans - Benjamin Lingle and Shaun Browne; three Air Force veterans - James Bickett, Ronald Hayes and Heyward McFadden.
