Stacie Savage of Franklin and Kathleen Schmelzer of Deep River are scheduled to start their 22-week police training on Dec. 31. Following their graduation in June, they will start 14 weeks of field training before they are assigned to patrol duties. Savage is a 2015 graduate of the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in criminal justice. Comment?
I might suggest the new $11.5 million exhibition hall under construction at Mystic Seaport, one of the region's largest current building projects, may eventually benefit Mystic at large as much as the Seaport. It will, with its opening planned for the fall of 2016, put the Seaport in a larger orbit of New England museums. Comment?
New London - Mitchell College is considering shifting its focus, literally, with a plan that would reconfigure the campus center away from its current industrial view of Groton and toward the resplendent mouth of the Thames River and Long Island Sound, and would make the school's distinctive circa-1885 "Umbrella House" its signature attraction. College President Janet Steinmayer and Centerbrook Architects and Planners will present a proposed master plan to the public at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mitchell College Weller Center, and are encouraging the public to attend, see the plan, hear about the school's vision and offer comments. The management of cultural facilities will be the topic of the Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition's next summit from 9:15 to 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at Charter Oak Federal Credit Union's Waterford headquarters. "Our panel of experts will share insight and professional knowledge about topics ranging from property management, cultural facilities standards, planning & budgeting, and the value of investment in facilities on the arts & cultural sector and, by extension, our economy," according to a cultural coalition release.
