    In it's home fieldhouse, the Homestead girls basketball team had Germantown star guards Taylor Higginbotham and Val Meissner in serious foul trouble at the half Thursday night. But in the end, Germantown would not be denied its second straight outright North Shore Conference title, as Higginbotham played through four fouls for much of the fourth quarter to score 25 points and Meissner added 16, including six straight clinching free throws at the end.

    The defense for the Homestead girls basketball team held Cedarburg without a field goal for over 13 minutes in the second half Friday night, but the Highlanders couldn't score enough themselves, as they lost the battle for the North Shore Conference runner-up spot, 53-42. In the end, the Bulldogs' height proved too much for the Highlanders "We knew that would be their biggest advantage," said Highlander coach Corey Wolf.

The theft of 17 cans of baby formula valued at $323 and 12 organic fruit pouches valued at more than $20 was caught on surveillance video at Metro Market, 11558 N. Port Washington Road, at 5:07 p.m. Jan. 22. A woman was seen loading a basket with the items, putting the basket under a produce table and walking away.

    It was never a pretty game between the Homestead and Whitefish Bay girls basketball teams Friday night in the nightcap of the boy-girl doubleheader at Bay. But for the Highlanders, it was a perfectly lovely fourth quarter, as they broke a 28-all tie by scoring the first 14 points of the session and then cruising home to a 44-34 North Shore Conference victory.

    More than $400 was taken from a wallet that must have fallen out of a backpack in the boys' locker room during a basketball game at Homestead High School, 5000 W. Mequon Road, between 8 and 11 a.m. Dec. 29. When the boy returned to the locker room and discovered his wallet was missing, another student found it under a bench. The boy reported then that the money he'd received for Christmas had been taken.

    A resident reported that items valued at more than $1,400, including $450 cash, a $500 laptop, a $190 chemistry textbook and a $140 calculator, were taken from an unlocked car in the 12000 block of North Sunset Road between 3 and 11 a.m. Dec. 17 and reported Dec. 18. The trunk was found open and the glove box rummaged through. Also taken was at least one debit/credit card, which someone attempted to use at stores on West Good Hope and West Brown Deer roads, including a Walgreens and Redbox.

    In a 6-1 vote last week, the Common Council awarded a $175,000 loan to the Bartolotta management firm, which is opening a supper club-style eatery at the site of the former Riversite restaurant, 11120 N. Cedarburg Road. Bartolotta - doing business locally as BRG 11120 Cedarburg - sought and received a revolving loan with the caveat the funds be used to purchase restaurant equipment at the revamped facility, which is an important linchpin in Mequon's Town Center development.

    Parishioners from St. Francis Borgia Parish Cedarburg served "Breakfast with Baby Jesus" at the House of Peace, a Capuchin ministry that serves Milwaukee's central city on December 13. A large group of parishioners prepared a full breakfast and served the House of Peace guests at two seatings. The parishioners also had a team help with preparing House of Peace food boxes for the families.

    The Mequon Common Council last week quickly approved an ordinance prohibiting sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of schools, parks, libraries, day care centers or any other areas where children congregate. In a letter to the common council, Mequon Police Chief Steven Graff said a sex offender residency restriction ordinance was voted down in 2007 and 2010.
