    As Micus Ward was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Jacqueline Bell, her son Alex Bell stood to address the courtroom. He told his mother's killer that he hoped no one would protect him in prison, just as the man's 71-year-old victim lay unprotected in her sleep before he beat her to death with a sledgehammer.

    A park security officer received three years in prison Thursday for setting fire to empty houses on park property in the Cedar Mill community using road flares. John Michael Townsend, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree arson and three counts each of second-degree arson in Washington County Circuit Court in May. Townsend, who is employed with Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, initially faced five first-degree arson charges.
