    Word came in late summer that these northern cousins of the white-breasted nuthatch were moving our way in what birders call an "irruption," and sure enough, reports of this dynamic little guy started popping up all over - from Alpine to Cape May. Red-breasted nuthatches are about two-thirds the size of their white-breasted relatives, and there's a strong family resemblance, except for that beautiful russet chest. To learn more about red-breasted nuthatches, I turned to Bill Boyle, author of "The Birds of New Jersey" and all-around birding guru.
