    A Moreno Valley man who died early Sunday, May 7, made an "unsafe turning movement" while driving along San Timoteo Canyon Road that caused him to crash, the California Highway Patrol said. Larry Splawn Jr., 34, was driving a blue 2003 Acura 2 TLX sedan west on San Timoteo Canyon Road on the border of Calimesa, just north of Beaumont, according to a CHP news release.

    Calimesa has an extra six months of breathing room as it explores creating a city-operated fire department to replace its contract with Cal Fire and Riverside County that city officials have said is too costly for the small city. The city's contract had been due to expire June 30, but the two sides negotiated a cooperative agreement to extend service through Dec. 31. That agreement was approved by the council Feb. 21, and by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, March 7. The county contracts with CalFire to provide services in unincorporated Riverside County and with contract cities.
