    Organizers of a cultural exchange program at West Valley College are still seeking families in the area to host students from a technical school in Aalborg, Denmark, from Feb. 21 to March 18. The program was launched early this year by Cameron Moore, a businessman who splits his time between the Bay Area and Denmark, to give Danish students an opportunity to attend classes, explore Silicon Valley and discover how Californians live. Moore is looking to recruit up to 26 host families for the program.

    In an article reporting on the need for stronger Bay Area regional government Saturday, Jon Coupal of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Foundation claimed that California has the highest gas tax. Here are the states with the highest state gas taxes as of Oct. 1 according to the American Petroleum Institute: Pennsylvania, 55.5 cents; Washington, 44.5 cents; New York, 44.27 cents; Hawaii, 43.15 cents; California, 40.92 cents.

    Just once, could we have a few days to celebrate a heroic triumph over violence before the next senseless shooting intervenes? On Wednesday, as three former high school buddies from Carmichael still were basking in international praise for their lifesaving heroism on a Paris-bound train last week, a former Bay Area man gunned down a Virginia television reporter and a cameraman on the air, killing them and injuring another woman. The Virginia gunman, who later killed himself, was an angry former employee, not a possible terrorist with an AK 47 on a train.
