    Michigan Department of Natural Resources fire personnel spent much of the overnight and early-morning hours working to contain several wildfires, including three that were significant: The Grayling Fire was reported at approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday along I-75 in southern Crawford County, about 7 miles south of Grayling. The fire jumped the southbound lane of I-75 and stopped when it hit the northbound lane.

Johnson Hunt and Fish Center in Cadillac, Michigan, will offer the Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Skills Academy's Hard Water School ice-fishing class Saturday, Feb. 24, starting at 9 a.m. The class will focus on techniques for walleye, taught by pro fisherman Steve Berry from Clam Outdoors and Vexilar, along with Matt Peterson from Fish Bones Custom Lures; techniques for pan fish, taught by pro fisherman Norm Smith, the DNR's Dennis Hewitt and Dave Young from HT Enterprise; and setting polar tip-ups to target monster northern pike, taught by the DNR's Ed Shaw. In addition, DNR Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staff will be on hand to teach a variety of tactics on the ice.

    The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is expanding winter recreation opportunities at Leelanau State Park with the addition of a new, marked winter sports trail open to hikers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers and fat tire bikers. An introduction to hunting upland birds such as pheasants, this class will take place at Tails-a-Waggin' Acres game bird preserve in Marion and the DNR's Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Cadillac. Following the instructional portion of the class, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever and Tails-a-Waggin' will provide guided pheasant hunts.
