    Former Fluvanna County Sheriff Ryant L. Washington secured the nomination Saturday as the Democratic candidate in the race to represent Virginia Senate District 22 in Richmond. Out of the 145 ballots cast during the caucus held at the Moton Museum in Farmville, Washington, a Buckingham County native, received 108 votes, while Lynchburg Democratic Party Chairwoman and educator Katie Webb Cyphert received 35. According to Jeff Rosner, who served as chair of the caucus and nominating committee, two ballots were handed in blank.

    A possibly record volume of traffic during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend did not translate into an increase of traffic deaths across Virginia. In fact, preliminary reports from Virginia State Police indicate a total of seven people were killed in seven traffic crashes statewide, two fewer than during the 2015 Thanksgiving holiday and eight fewer than in 2014.

    A new group has formed to preserve, restore and celebrate the history of Alexander Hill Baptist Church in Buckingham - the oldest and first African-American church in the county. A Buckingham Circuit Court judge recently appointed Joseph Scruggs, Mary E. Brown Shelton and Martha Pennington Louis as trustees of the church, which hasn't held services in years and is in poor condition.

    Planners in Buckingham County have recommended approval of a special use permit allowing Atlantic Coast Pipeline LLC to construct a 53,515 horsepower natural gas fired compressor station as part of ACP's 600-mile natural gas pipeline project. The county planning commission's 7-0-1 recommendation to approve the permit with 40 conditions now goes to the board of supervisors, which has final approval authority.

    Buckingham's planning and zoning office has released 40 conditions as part of an on-going special use permit process where Atlantic Coast Pipeline is seeking to construct a 53,515 horsepower compressor station along Route 56 as part of its 600-mile ACP natural gas pipeline project. In late October, a subcommittee of the planning commission, which is currently considering the permit request, was organized to review and amend the original conditions on the permit.

    Buckingham's fourth largest employer - is set to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Columbia Gas and ACP "to acquire a tap, metering and a decompression station and construction of a lateral pipeline off of that will provide natural gas to ," County Attorney E.M. Wright Jr. told members of the board of supervisors following a short closed session Tuesday night. Upon learning of Kyanite's agreement, the county was approached about the possibility of entering into a MOU with the company "that would give the county the option to control approximately 200 acres through which this lateral pipeline would go," Wright said.

The tap to the lateral line from the 42-inch ACP, Wright said, would carry enough capacity "to handle the needs of Kyanite, plus maybe three to four companies the size of Kyanite."

    From the center of Farmville at the intersection of Main Street, West Third Street starts at 25 mph, becomes 35 as it passes near the Farmville Historic Train Station, increases to 40 mph between Centra Southside Community Hospital and, finally, becomes 45 mph after it leaves the town limits and heads to the intersection of U.S. routes 15 and 460. In most cases, speed limits are - and have traditionally been - set by the Virginia Department of Transportation .
