    Family members of people addicted to opioids can obtain a prescription for a medication to reverse the effects of a potentially dangerous overdose. A bill approved by the 2017 Mississippi Legislature will allow health care providers to write "standing prescriptions" to people close to opioid addicts for naloxone, a drug known as an opioid antagonist that reverses opioid overdoses.

    The turnover rate for the 2,900 direct care workers employed by the Department of Mental Health was 48 percent for fiscal year 2015, legislators were told Wednesday. Wendy Bailey, a spokeswoman for the Department of Mental Health, said it is not uncommon for the agency to lose direct care workers to other jobs such as fast food restaurants.

    Supporters of a bill that would have added domestic abuse as grounds for divorce in Mississippi were outraged after it died in a House committee, whose chairman argued that the legislature shouldn't pass measures "opening the floodgates" to more divorces. Senate Bill 2703, which passed the Mississippi Senate, wasn't taken up Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee Division B at a deadline for legislation to advance.

    No legislation will pass this session addressing the issue of Mississippi having the second highest percentage of felons who are not allowed to vote. Senate Elections Chairwoman Sally Doty, R-Brookhaven, said she does not intend the take up a House bill that would create a task force to possibly make recommendations on the issue of felons losing their voting rights.
