    State and federal officials are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at a Rosebud Mining site in Snyder Township, Jefferson County on Tuesday. According to Jim Barker, executive vice president at Rosebud Mining Company, federal and state safety officials were still at the scene investigating the accident as of 11 a.m. Jefferson County Coroner Brenda Shumaker said the 27-year-old male victim, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at 6:01 p.m. Tuesday following an accident near the Kocjancic Mine Project just outside of Brockway.

    The Jim and Jean Cretti Open Doors Scholarship has been established at Penn State DuBois in honor of the late couple. Taking advantage of an unprecedented 2:1 matching opportunity, the Crettis' son, Jim Jr., pledged $30,000 to create the scholarship in his parents' name, which will be matched with $60,000 from Penn State, creating a $90,000 endowment.

The AML includes Bradford, Brockway, Curwensville, Elk County Catholic, Kane, Ridgway, Cameron County, Coudersport, Otto-Eldred, Port Allegany, Sheffield and Smethport.

    With a 14-4 victory on Tuesday the Curwensville girls softball team went above .500 on the 2018 season with a 4-3 record. The win was at the expense of the Brockway Lady Rovers whom Curwensville blanked, in Brockway, 14-0 back on April 14. Curwensville jumped out to a 4-0 start in the bottom of the first inning while picking up just one hit but receiving two walks and watching the Rovers commit two errors.

    It took nine innings Monday afternoon, but in the end the Curwensville girls softball team edged visiting Johnsonburg 3-2 thanks to a couple of Lady Tide heroes. Senior Anne Hoover, who struggled at the plate for Curwensville early on, singled home the winning run with a two out base hit to right field in the bottom of the ninth that sent home Keisha Maines.

    After again being forced to wait even longer to get back on the diamond due to the cold and wet weather that has plagued the area, finally the Curwensville Golden Tide were able to get on the field and actually play some baseball on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. Ironically, the game was a make-up contest originally slated for this past Thursday against the Elk County Catholic Crusaders, but this time the chill did not stop the two sides from taking to the field.

Make-up game is set for on Monday, April 30, with a first-pitch slated for 4:15 p.m. Curwensville starts a stretch of four consecutive road games beginning Thursday when they face Punxsutawney.
