    CHARLTON – Ninety-one-year-old Armand St. Laurent, a popular, retired woodcutter, died Wednesday in a fire in his shed at 168 Berry Corner Road, according to his son, Raymond St. Laurent. Mr. DeSimone said the origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Charlton Fire and Police departments, state police assigned to the office of the state fire marshal, and Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. At the scene of the fire, two state police troopers asked to speak to Raymond St. Laurent privately inside his father's house for several minutes.

    NORTH BROOKFIELD – Almost a year in planning and construction, Saturday marked the official opening of the Almost Home Holding Facility at the Second Chance Animal Shelter's Wellness Clinic at 372 North Main St. But it was Indie and Buddy, two Pitbull mix puppies, emblematic of the work being done by the 40-member Second Chance staff, who stole the show at the open house. Sheryl Blancato, executive director, said the holding facility, built with a $375,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, provides isolation kennel facilities that comply with state regulations requiring 48-hour quarantine for out-of-state dog and cat rescues.

    Firefighters and the state fire marshal's office are investigating a fire Tuesday night at Walmart on 100 Charlton Road.  The state fire marshal's office said the building was evacuated and nobody was hurt. An investigator was on scene Tuesday to try to determine the cause and origin of the fire with local police and fire investigators, the fire marshal's office said.  According to the Fire Department, around 5:25 p.m., dispatchers received calls from Walmart reporting a fire in the building.
