    Fire Chief Hugh Henderson, 54, announced his decision formally at Monday's board meeting, saying he will retire March 30. He said he initially planned to retire when his three-year contract expires June 1: "I just decided to do it a little sooner." Henderson said he had notified board President Joel Bryant and Vice President Meghan Bell shortly after the November election and that they have been working with him since then to effect a smooth transition.

They chose the name "East County Voters for Equal Protection" because they deemed that the poor level of fire and emergency medical services funding in East County was a problem that illustrated unequal treatment, and they sought a more equitable level of funding for this most essential government service.
