    Volunteer firefighters in Brightwaters, NY rescued osprey chicks trapped in a burning nest atop a transformer near Gilbert Park yesterday According to Bay Ashore Fire Chief John Ippolito, the nest had caused the transformer to overheat and ended up burning it from underneath while the baby birds waited for their mother to return. Two of the volunteers, Kyle Voges and Brian Ball made their way up the pole on a ladder and were able to douse the flames with a dry chemical extinguisher and remove the chicks, after consulting with the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays.They then hosed the nest down before returning the 3 surviving babies to their home to be reunited with their mom.
