    Heading into the 2017 tourism season fresh off two record years, the mayors of Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach are appealing to Manatee County to invest more money in its greatest tourism asset: the barrier islands. Without it, an infrastructure funding gap of $61.5 million is expected to grow over the next 15 years, according to a report developed during the past few months by the four barrier island mayors.

    The Longboat Key Police Department investigated a string of vehicle break-ins reported between 5:54 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. Sunday on the north side of the island. A 24-year-old boat owner visiting from Lakeland reported $2,150 worth of gear was taken sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 4:30 a.m. Sunday from his vessel in the Longbeach Village parking lot at 7145 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

    While the U.S. Coast Guard will soon explore changing the amount of times Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island bridges open, a request by the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization to do the same for the Longboat Pass Bridge was rejected. "While the Coast Guard agrees that both vehicular and vessel traffic in this area has grown our primary concern encompasses safety of all modes of transportation," wrote Coast Guard Director of Bridge Administration Barry Dragon in a May 19 memo to MPO Executive Director David Hutchinson.
