Commuters driving through on Topanga Canyon Boulevard can expect intermittent delays on weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., due to the Utility Undergrounding Project now underway. Ward Corp, the contractor for the Topanga Undergrounding Utility District , began soil remediation on July 21 on the west side of Topanga Canyon Boulevard near the Old Canyon intersection.

    Construction is underway for a new Tesoro gas station at the corner of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and PCH that will replace the Thrifty station that closed about 15 years ago. If all goes well, by this fall, Topangans will be able to buy gasoline and Slurpees at a brand new Tesoro gas station at the corner of PCH and Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

    After many years of planning, the Topanga utilities undergrounding project is ready to begin the next phase of construction around July 6, according to the project's utility lead, Dave Seeley of Southern California Edison . The Aerially Deposited Lead survey and environmental mitigation requirements were completed earlier this year with representatives of the Native American community monitoring for artifacts and the report provided to Caltrans for their review.

    Thanks to TASC and the Watershed Committee for sounding the alarm on the needless cutting of healthy trees along the Boulevard. As they point out, the greatest danger is not from trees falling on power lines and blocking the Boulevard; we all know that it takes just one car to block the Boulevard.

    Imagine Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the center ot town without the unsightly utility poles. Starting in February, Los Angeles County and Southern California Edison will be removing the poles and placing the utilities underground.

    The TASC Board of Directors is generally inclined to resist removal of perfectly healthy trees in Topanga, but enthusiastically supports the North Topanga Canyon Fire Safe Council in its efforts to cut dead or certifiable dying trees. TASC, however, feels that the upside of slightly increasing safety on the Boulevard is not compelling enough to justify the killing of healthy trees.
