In 1871, long before he built the George J. Brooks Library in Brattleboro, Vermont , George J. Brooks built Brooks House Hotel , also known as Hotel Brooks, an eighty-seven room hotel in downtown Brattleboro designed by the commercial architectural firm of E. Boyden and Son of Worcester, Massachusetts in the Second Empire style of architecture. Although it was a popular resort, famous from Boston to New York City, Brooks had built the hotel more in the spirit of rebuilding his beloved hometown after a disastrous fire than in view of making a profit.
