    Wendy Patoprsty has joined the Blue Ridge Conservancy as the new, full-time project director for the Middle Fork Greenway. Patoprsty moved to Watauga County in 2000 after receiving a bachelor of science in horticulture from the University of Georgia, and she received her master's degree in geography from Appalachian State University.

    On April 18, Joseph Dwayne Morrow, 27, pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender, according to the office of District Attorney Seth Banks. Morrow was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child in 2006.

    Boone Police are continuing to attempt to locate James Martin Roberts after first announcing the search for the 19-year-old on April 22. Roberts was wearing a black, short sleeve, Appalachian State windbreaker, khaki shorts, gray New Balance shoes and a white golf visor hat when last seen. Roberts is from Kernersville and currently resides in Boone while attending Caldwell Community College.

The board of adjustment on Feb. 10 sided in favor of Johnny Hampton, J.W. Hampton Co.

    Boone Town Council members on April 21 detailed a long list of concerns about the proposed Rivers Walk mixed-use apartment project in downtown Boone before voting to delay consideration of the requested rezoning until the May council meeting. McKinley Boone LLC is seeking planned development rezoning for a mixed-use building containing both residential and commercial uses, including a parking deck for properties located at 178 South Water St., 190 and 208 Poplar Grove Road.

    Mountain View Speedway issued a statement April 20 noting that it plans to continue holding races at a High Country Fairgrounds dirt track despite a town of Boone letter advising the speedway to cease operations. The town of Boone on April 11 sent a letter to Mountain View Speedway directing the business to cease operations, and the town's Board of Adjustment on April 18 voted to dismiss an appeal brought by Roby Greene Road residents related to a previous town decision on the speedway.

    The Watauga County Sheriff's Department, State Highway Patrol and Cove Creek Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 321 North near Mast Gap Road at 5 a.m. Friday after a car driven by a 17-year-old driver from Sugar Grove left the roadway and struck a utility pole. According to Trooper D. Searcy with the State Highway Patrol, the vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 321 when it went off the right side of the road, struck a utility pole and overturned one time.

    The team from Hardin Park Elementary School won the 15th Annual Grown-Up Spelling Bee on April 12. 26 teams from various groups around the High Country vied for the top spelling honors. The winner word, "banausic," proved a challenge for the finalists - "anthophilous" and "latke" were other difficult words that helped seed out the master spellers from the average.
