    High Country Host will relocate its visitor center to the new Appalachian Ski Mountain welcome center in early August after the building's construction is complete, said High Country Host President Ben McKethan. McKethan said High Country Host expects the new location on U.S. 321 to attract more visitors due to its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Ski Mountain, as well as being near both Blowing Rock and Boone.

According to a release from President Pro Tempore Sen. Phil Berger's office, the budget would increase average teacher pay to nearly $55,000 within two years, a raise of about 20 percent from the current average, which is $47,783.

    We would like to ask - although we suspect we know the answer - which piece of paper that she recently received meant more to Martha Trimble: her master's degree in middle school education from Appalachian State University or the certificate she is seen posing with on the front page of Wednesday's Watauga Democrat revealing her as Watauga County Schools' educator of the year? From Trimble's personal statement of teaching philosophy, which includes nuggets such as being open to learning new techniques, meeting students where they are, and challenging them socially and academically, there is little doubt that having earned the honor of being named educator of the year outstrips the advanced degree - especially in the minds of her students and colleagues.
