With antennas and cable all over the place, the Blowing Rock Fire Department's Station 2 became the hub for the Watauga Amateur Radio Club's Field Day on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25. Scott Douglass operates a Morse Code ham radio set up during the Watauga Amateur Radio Club's Field Day on Saturday and Sunday, June 24-25.

    Larry Thomas "Tom" McLean Jr., 45, of Charlotte, N.C., died on June 21, 2017, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City after battling a rare form of kidney cancer. Tom is survived by his wife, Amy Clayborne McLean of Charlotte and his children, Caroline Claiborne McLean, 18, and Samuel Thomas McLean, 14. He was also survived by his mother, Alleine Coffey McLean of Matthews and predeceased by his father, Larry Thomas McLean.

    A scale model of a statue of famed North Carolina Impressionist Elliott Daingerfield was unveiled to the public at the commissioners meeting this past February and won approval to be placed on the grounds of Edgewood Cottage, Daingerfield's former studio in downtown Blowing Rock. "The Historical Society is excited about this," said Rita White, president of the BRHS.
