    Many High Country post offices, including those in Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Newland, Deep Gap, Fleetwood, Jefferson, West Jefferson and Lansing, will extend Saturday retail hours for the three weekends before Christmas, Dec. 5, 12 and 19. On those dates, offices will observe their weekly retail opening Monday-Saturday, and Saturday hours will be extended until normal weekly close of business.

    A Watauga County sheriff's deputy stopped Davis on Dec. 28, 2014, for faulty driving on U.S. Highway 321 between Boone and Blowing Rock at approximately 11 a.m., according to the District Attorney's Office. The deputy determined Davis was impaired and had an alcohol concentration above the legal limit.

Official and unofficial reports of rainfall received by the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, Va., included totals of 3.58 inches, 3.23 inches and 2.3 inches at various Boone locations; 3.44 inches in Blowing Rock; 3.2 inches at Parkway School; 3.43 and 3.23 inches in Foscoe; 2.64 inches in Valle Crucis; 1.74 inches in Bethel; and 1.33 inches in Beech Mountain.

    It may not be the Great Pumpkin that Linus was telling Charlie Brown about in the Peanuts Halloween cartoon special, but it's still a great pumpkin. Rob Dyer, co-owner of the Best Cellar Restaurant and the Inn at Ragged Gardens in Blowing Rock, had a 700 pound pumpkin installed near the entrance to the inn on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Another pumpkin weighing a mere 350 pounds was placed in the garden area near the inn's entrance on Sunset Drive.
