    Volunteers, with the help of students at the Ridge and Valley Charter School in Blairstown, have planted 163 trees on the banks of the Paulins Kill in Stillwater to mitigate invasive species that prevents reforestation and ultimately, causes erosion. Without the necessary shade and leaf litter that encourages native species to grow, an invasive grass, called canary reed grass, has dominated the flood plains, and due to its thickness, trees have been unable to grow, according to Ian Blanchard, vice chairman of the Stillwater Environmental Commission, who has been working on the project with Wallkill River Watershed Management Group Director Nathaniel Sajdak.
