    The new Black River Bridge at Black Rock opened for traffic Friday morning. County Judge Dale Freeman, Black Rock Mayor Bonnie Ragsdale and Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp led the ceremonial first crossing of the bridge.

    Planning for a new county jail has been temporarily halted as county officials look into the possibility of locating a regional facility in Lawrence County. At Monday night's quorum court meeting, Judge Dale Freeman said just within the last week, all plans for a new jail were changed.

    The Lawrence County Quorum Court voted to advertise for architects and design teams to act as consultants on a new county jail in order to get some official information for the different options the county has under review. Justice Lloyd Clark, chair of the jail committee, said they have received multiple unofficial cost estimates but need to get a more substantiated estimate before moving forward on deciding a location.

    Work continues on the new Black River Bridge being built 15 feet from the current bridge, which has stood there for over 60 years. The Rasmussen Group with Jensen Construction Company, who was awarded the winning bid in November 2012, started installing the girders last week.

    The Arkansas State Highway Commission has approved a bid to widen 1.5 miles of Highway 63 to five lanes extending west from Free Street in Portia. This project will extend the four lanes from Portia to the new Black River Bridge at Black Rock that's currently under construction.

    Robert's Service Center has served the communities of Portia, Black Rock and the surrounding areas for 36 years, and owners Robert and Fern Shelton have said it's time to close the last full-service station in Lawrence County. The business, inherited from Robert's brother, Hulen Shelton, who died in a car accident, was opened under the name Robert's Esso in Black Rock in 1978.

    After a recent review of the Lawrence County Jail, the Arkansas Jail Standards Committee voted to close the facility. Working with Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, the county was able to get a six-month extension, which will provide the time needed to determine the next course of action.
