  12. Faith Matravers LewisRead the original story

    Jan 27, 2014 | Palladium-Item

BEULAH, Mich. - Faith Matravers Lewis passed away peacefully Sunday, January 19, 2014 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Faith Lewis was an expression of warmth, vitality and unconditional love, as a beloved daughter, wife, mother, and friend. Born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1924, she was the oldest of three children. Faith, Joan Wason and Mitzi Moulds were devoted sisters and lifelong friends, giggling for hours whenever they got together! From an early age, education and the arts were an integral part of her family's life. Of special importance to Faith, was her grandmother Nan's beloved Steinway parlor grand piano, which Faith played throughout her life. Her lifetime devotion to the arts, especially music, included a decade of leadership and development of the Whitewater Opera Company in Richmond, Indiana while raising 6 children. Faith married Jack Lewis in 1947 after graduating from Principia College, and together they nurtured a lively family of six children and an endless assortment of pets. Faith's industrious nature was always eager to learn a craft and never faced a home project with less than full throttle including woodworking, upholstery, painting, needlework. Idle hands didn't exist in her world. Recycling was practiced not preached, conservation and preservation were part of her loving and humble stewardship of God's creation. With a large family and stray friends always about, Faith provided only whole foods decades before Whole Foods. Faith's stint as a camp counselor at Camp Kohahna during college was the genesis of a lifetime of summers in Leelanau County. Faith and Jack retired to their beloved Lake Michigan cottage at the foot of the Sleeping Bear where they embraced the majesty and beauty of nature including swimming, hiking, skiing, sailing, bird watching, etc. Faith will be remembered most for her remarkable childlike spirit - the pixie smile, the wide-eyed curiosity, the complete freedom from ego. Strangers who met her unfailingly felt bathed in her quiet radiance. One new acquaintance was moved to ask Faith if she could identify the source of her generous spirituality. "My religion," Faith replied without hesitation. A lifelong Christian Scientist, Faith believed that God is Love, and she humbly saw herself as a unique reflection of that ever-present Divine Love. Her family - the late Melinda Lewis-Matravers, Kirk and Valerie Lewis, Sabrina and Greg Garland, Boyd and Fiorella Lewis, Peter and Naila Lewis, Beryl and Frank Skrocki and Bill Smith. In addition, her eight grandchildren will have everlasting memories of their sweet little "Muzzy". Memorials may be sent to Friends of Sleeping Bear (http://friendsofsleepingbear.org/) or Camp Kohahna (http://www.leelanau-kohahna.org/). The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, is in charge of arrangements. www.bennett-barzfuneralhome.com
