    The state Division for Historic Preservation has canceled a vote next month on whether to recommend that the Paper Mill Village covered bridge be deleted from the National Register of Historic Places. Historic Preservation Officer Laura Trieschmann said a notice the town received of a scheduled Jan. 19 vote by the Vermont Advisory Council on Historic Preservation on a delisting recommendation for the bridge was sent prematurely.

    Town officials say they are bewildered and outraged after learning that the state architectural historian is recommending removal of the Paper Mill Village covered bridge from the National Register of Historic Places. Town Economic and Community Development Director Michael Harrington was notified of the recommendation in a Nov. 30 letter from Devin Colman, an official with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, who said the covered bridge "will be considered by the Vermont Advisory Council on Historic Preservation for removal from the National Register of Historic Places at its meeting on January 19, 2017."

Kasey Kathan, an environmental analyst in the Agency of Natural Resources solid waste program, said the agency required all closed landfills in the two counties to conduct testing for perfluorinated chemicals.

    Two men were found dead at Shaftsbury Hollow Road on Friday afternoon in what is believed to be a murder-suicide, according to Vermont State Police. Troopers say they found the bodies of two men with gunshot wounds: Olanda Fitz, 28, of Shaftsbury; and Trevor Gardner, 38, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y. The investigation is ongoing, Vermont State Police said in a news release.
