    Nearly 20 years after he retired from teaching physical education in Prince George's County, Donald Conway of Beltsville still makes exercise and education a part of his regular routine - and that's only part of the reason he was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame last month. Conway, 76 - who has honored for leading athletic activities for children throughout his career - and Delores Brown, 79, of Glenarden – who was honored for helping secure scholarships for students - were the only two county residents among 45 Marylanders inducted into the hall of fame during an Oct. 23 ceremony.

    A Prince George's County school bus driver was sentenced to house arrest Friday for an incident that injured five children on April 7. Arturo Harris, 61, of Clinton left his bus unattended and it rolled to a bus stop, striking a 6-year-old child on the sidewalk and injuring four students on the bus, said Gina Ford, a spokeswoman for the Prince George's County State's Attorney's office. Harris said he left the bus unattended near High Point High School in Beltsville in order to use the restroom at the school, Ford said.

    Construction has begun on an $83.1 million replacement high school for the aging Fairmont Heights High School in Capitol Heights. “We are extremely excited about embarking on this journey, about receiving this new facility,” said Principal Torrie Walker during a ground breaking ceremony held Oct. 22. The new school is expected to open in fall 2017, said Melissa Wilfong, vice president of Beltsville-based architectural firm Grimm + Parker.

The Maryland State Department of Education requested the school system come up with an action plan for Thomas Claggett Elementary School in District Heights due to declining enrollment and lagging performance, said Johndel Jones-Brown, director of pupil accounting and boundaries at a Tuesday meeting at the school.
