    Surveillance video shows at least six suspects involved in the scheme. According to Detective J.T. Bliss with Gastonia Police, at least four men and two women combined to form an organized crime ring focused on taking checks from mailboxes, using counterfeiting software to reproduce copies, buying items from Wal-Mart and then returning the items for cash at different Wal-Mart stores.

    Police say a man entered a Belmont convenience store early Tuesday morning, jumped the counter and used a semi-automatic handgun to force the store's clerk to open the cash register and safe. Belmont police responded to a call at the Murphy USA at 100 Caldwell Farm Road at about 6:20 a.m., though the suspect apparently fled in a Mitsubishi truck before authorities could arrest him.

    Thousands of meals hit kitchen tables in Gaston County this month thanks to Postal Office letter carriers and the people on their delivery routes. The Letter Carriers annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive conducted earlier this month collected more than 40,000 pounds of food, with 30,000 coming from Gastonia routes and another 10,000 pounds coming from routes in Mount Holly, Belmont and Cramerton, said Jeff Shirley, food drive coordinator for the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1512.
