    Gaston County's school board met Friday intending to approve using $485,000 in taxpayer money from its operating budget to help county commissioners purchase 78 acres of land next to South Point High to build the school. But laws governing local government will prevent the Board of Education from chipping in the money, such as Belmont did earlier this week, school board members said Friday after emerging from an hour-long closed session with their attorney.  Instead, school board members resorted to a plea of asking the county commissioners to either pay more or for the property owners to drop the price even further to make up for their part of the financing puzzle.

    Within a 10-minute time frame Saturday, two women - 83 and 65 years old - reported having their purses taken from the Belmont store at 701 Hawley Ave. One of the women was talking to a man in the store before noticing her purse was stolen when she looked back over to her cart, according to police. Police analyzed security footage from the Wal-Mart and from a Lowell gas station, where a female suspect apparently used a stolen credit card to purchase $15 worth of gas.  "We compared the videos to the Lowell Mini-Mart," Belmont Police Lt.

    Andrew Michael Wooten, 22, has been charged with 10 felony counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle and 11 counts of misdemeanor larceny, among other charges.  According to his arrest warrants, Wooten broke into eight different people's cars Friday, stealing a number of items from the vehicles. These thefts included two bathing suits, loose change, house keys, sunglasses, $50, a Glock 43 9mm handgun and two cashier's checks that valued to $15,000.  Of the 10 total felony counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle, nine of those counts came from Cramerton Police.
