Department of Culture Resources, told a gathering at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, “and we are here today to commemorate the most famous of North Carolina pirates, Blackbeard.” For a pirate who's career spanned only two years that we know of, Blackbeard has made himself as notorious as any other pirate. Rumor claimed he once shot his first mate, Israel Hands, in the knee as a playful note.
