As residents and members of the board spoke for and against the center, a resident began to cite Quran verses to oppose the center, which created a tension in the room, according to the report.

    Federal officials say the pilot of a small plane that crashed in a New Jersey neighborhood last month told them the plane started losing power just before it went down. The 56-year-old pilot, George Pettway, was alone in the Piper PA-28R-200 when the crash occurred Feb. 19. The Long Island, New York man suffered a broken left forearm, several broken ribs and numerous contusions and abrasions and remained hospitalized Wednesday.

    At about midnight on Thursday, police were dispatched to a Kennedy Boulevard home in Bayonne, where they found Stanley Mazurczyk, unresponsive and with multiple stab wounds to his upper body, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said. Mazurczyk was transported to Bayonne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:35 p.m. The Medical Examiner determined he had died of the stab wounds, the prosecutor's office said.

    A New Jersey-based company that produces spices is recalling several brands of turmeric powder because of elevated levels of lead in the products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced. Gel Spice Inc., headquartered in Bayonne, announced that it will expand its recall of ground turmeric powder to include additional brands after testing showed that there were elevated lead levels in the powdered spice.

    The U.S. Coast Guard says an 8-year-old boy who fell into a pool on a cruise ship off the coast of New Jersey and nearly drowned is in critical condition. Coast Guard Senior Chief Steven Allard tells the New York Daily News that the boy had been in the water for eight to 10 minutes Thursday evening before officials with Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas found him.
