Gregory J. Schaffer, of Bayonne, was found guilty Friday following a three day trial, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

    John Hughes, a long time resident and notable figure in the city, died last week at Hackensack University Medical Center at the age of 71. Described as an "unsung hero" within the community, Hughes served in a number of leadership positions within the city, including as public defender in municipal court and as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 25. "We have lost our outstanding Bayonne Scoutmaster, John Hughes," Mayor Jimmy Davis said in a statement. "He passed away after a lifetime of great service to the Bayonne community; he helped thousands of people during the course of his life."

    Ryan Bickram, 24, of West 54th Street, was arrested and charged with lewdness after a library employee witnessed him "with his hand inside his pants masturbating while sitting at a library table," police said. Police were called to the library around 2 p.m. after the employee witnessed him in the reference room on the left side of the building "touching himself in front of a young lady," a library employee who declined to be named told The Jersey Journal.
