Organizers of the 626 Golden Streets event set for Sunday issued the following statement on the event's postponement: "Due to active wildfires affecting air quality in the San Gabriel Valley region, public safety officials and city staff, who have been monitoring the situation closely, have officially moved to postpone the 626 Golden Streets event to a future date. The participating cities of South Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Azusa, San Marino, Irwindale, county of Los Angeles, Metro, Bike San Gabriel Valley and event organizers would like to inform the public at this time that the 18-plus mile open streets event and all activities scheduled for June 26, 2016, will no longer be held this Sunday. 626 Golden Streets will take place along a roughly 18-mile route traversing South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa and a portion of Los Angeles County. The route runs alongside six Gold Line stations stretching east from South Pasadena to Azusa. Comment?
Brushfires dangerously close to each other in Azusa and Duarte had burned more than 5,400 acres by Wednesday, forcing hundreds of evacuations before temperatures started dropping from record three-digit highs to the low 90s. According to Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian, the fires - called the Reservoir fire in Azusa and the Fish fire in Duarte, collectively known as the Complex fire - were moving into the mountains, away from populated areas, but a low-level layer of smoke hung over much of the San Gabriel Valley throughout the week. As the most car-dependent city in America, Los Angeles has long vexed millions of drivers with nightmarish traffic jams. But thanks to a massive influx of funds collected since Measure R, a half-percent sales tax increase approved by voters in 2008, the county's Metro Rail system is taking major strides to effect change that is partially paying off Saturday with the opening of the Gold Line Foothill Extension from Pasadena to Azusa.
