    Firefighters battled freezing temperatures and a bitter wind Thursday evening to contain a blaze that spread from one home to another on Fifth Avenue in the borough, according to a press release. While both homes were unoccupied, and there were no injuries reported, two firefighters were treated at the scene by the Avalon Rescue Squad for exposure to the cold, Avalon spokesman Scott Wahl said in the release.

    Joining other shore towns in the state, Ocean City Council vehemently opposed a state bill that would require towns accepting state and federal money for beach replenishment to provide free beaches. Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing the bill, which is sponsored by Republican state Senator Michael J. Doherty of New Jersey's 23rd District .
