    The City of Auburn should focus on developing a more "vibrant," "walkable" downtown as a means for attracting the development of more residential and commercial space, a recent study, conducted for the city, recommended. Bleakly Advisory Group presented the Downtown Auburn Real Estate Market Overview and Analysis during a joint meeting of the Auburn City Council and downtown development authority Aug. 9. The study recommends new for-sale housing - and rental housing in later phases - with the majority of homes priced between $200,000-$350,000 with the possibility of new developments to go higher in pricing if they're located near a vibrant downtown area.

    At its meeting last Thursday, the Auburn City Council discussed a lease agreement leasing the Parks Mill and Mary Carter ballfields to the Georgia Baseball and Softball Association for the purpose of facilitating practice space for GBSA travel teams, hosting weekend tournaments and partnering to enhance ATA recreational baseball and softball programs. In the agreement, some items GBSA proposed were: paying the city $10 per player for all registered players that use the city-owned fields and facilities; GBSA paying 50 percent of the utility costs for operating the parks in which it conducts activities, and 20 percent of net profits earned from concessions during the seasons.

    The Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $2.15 million bid by Sunbelt Asphalt for patching and resurfacing on 11 county roads and one road within the city limits of Auburn. About $1.4 million of the work will be funded by a combination of county capital improvement and SPLOST funds; roughly $753,000 will come from a Georgia Department of Transportation Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant, and the City of Auburn will reimburse the county $33,862.30 for the work done inside the city limits.

    Over this past weekend, I worked with House and Senate leaders to smooth out the differences between the two chambers' versions of the appropriations bill directing all state funding for the fiscal year starting July 1. One key lesson I have learned while working under the Gold Dome is to always keep talking! An area of the budget we have had to continue working on is the bond money that each chamber is designating for the purchase of equipment to make Georgia's schools safer. I'm happy to report now that I've seen encouraging signs that the budget bill emerging from the conference committee will exceed the combined $10 million that was offered last week.
