    Frank Merrill of Atherton has spent years raising money and obtaining the necessary permissions and permits to build the Rich May Memorial Field in East Palo Alto, in honor of his stepson, an East Palo Alto police officer gunned down in the line of duty. Frank Merrill says that if the new state-of-the-art athletic field now under construction in East Palo Alto can "keep one kid from joining a gang or becoming a gang-banger or going and shooting someone," then it will be a success.

    No one was injured after a train struck a car on the tracks on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Both vehicles were burned when a fire broke out after the collision. A southbound Caltrain struck a car on the train tracks at Fair Oak Avenue in Atherton at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. The driver was able to escape the car before the collision, said Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman.
