    The Atlanta Braves honored Athens' Lemuel “Life" LaRoche on Wednesday, naming him one of five “community heroes” from across the Southeast to be recognized at Braves home games this week.  Team representatives paid a surprise visit to Clarke Central High School on Wednesday and presented a $5,000 check for the organization he founded six years ago, Chess and Community, and offered LaRoche a trip to Wednesday night's Braves game along with “50 of his closest friends,” in the words of Braves broadcaster Chip Caray. Caray was among the Braves entourage that traveled to Athens on Wednesday morning to surprise LaRoche, who had been told his visit to the high school was going to be a chess event.

    The first shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. when residents of Oak Hill Apartments called 911 to report they heard multiple gunshots at the complex located off Oak Hill Drive between Fourth Street and Old Hull Road in east Athens. When reviewing surveillance camera video at the complex, police said they identified a white Jeep Cherokee that was involved in the incident.

    As authorities moved in last week to arrest an Oglethorpe County couple accused of stealing $65,000 in supplies and equipment from an Athens school, the pair with their 3-year-old son wrecked their SUV while speeding from a hotel in Commerce. At about 11:22 a.m. Friday, someone called in a tip to the Banks County Sheriff's Office that the suspects - Eric Michael Aguilar and Sierra Nicole Yuhas - were staying at Comfort Suites on U.S. Highway 441, according to a sheriff's report.
