    North Carolina's law allowing magistrates and registers of deeds to opt out of performing marriages due to their religious beliefs is being challenged in federal court as unconstitutional. The lawsuit brought by the Asheville-based Campaign for Southern Equality, Equality NC, and individual plaintiffs say the law violates the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment and the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the 14th Amendment.
