    Chevron has awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County a $35,000 grant to help engage youth at the Stockdale Boys & Girls Club and the Armstrong Youth Center through the STEM Summer Camp and after school programming. STEM Summer Camp will include science, technology, engineering and math activities utilizing the Discover STEM Lab and related curriculum from Stemfinity as well as Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits and Google Maker Camp.

    A 20-year-old man is sitting in jail this weekend after reportedly firing a weapon at an Arvin Police officer early Sunday morning. Jerry Martinez with the Arvin Police Department said the shooting took place at around 6 a.m. Sunday, when officers got a report of a domestic dispute at the 1500 block of Bear Mountain Boulevard in Arvin.

    After almost nine months in housing limbo, state and local officials plan to release the final results of a recent analysis taken from air samples of several homes in Arvin affected by a dangerous gas leak. Officials said they would be meeting with those Arvin families at Golden Valley High School starting at 6 p.m. Officials said the results should help by reassuring families that it's safe to go back inside their homes.

    Hernan Cortez Villasenor , 40, of Michoacan, Mexico, was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a toxic marijuana cultivation operation in the Greenhorn Creek area of the Sequoia National Forest in Kern County, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. Cortez was also ordered to pay $3,328 in restitution to the U.S. Forest Service for the damage caused by his marijuana cultivation operation.
