    With the opening of the 2015 Arkansas Tech football season just a few short weeks away, Wonder Boys head football coach Raymond Monica welcomed 105 players to campus this week for the opening of football practice. The Wonder Boys donned their helmets at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday for the first on-field practice of the season and will add helmets and shoulder pads on Saturday and Sunday's practices.

The Dardanelle Sand Lizards head coach welcomed his first son into the world at 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, then coached his first basketball game of the season on Nov. 11. Several months later, Sturdivant was voted 2014-15 The Courier's Tri-County Coach of the Year by area coaches and Courier staff.

    Arkansas State Police say two Pine Bluff, men have been arrested as suspects in the shooting death of a convenience store clerk in Arkadelphia. The Texarkana Gazette reported Saturday the suspects were arrested in connection with the Sunday morning shooting death of Christopher Brown, 24, during an apparent robbery at Jordan's Kwick Shop.

    Arkansas Tech University dominated the final seven minutes of the first half and avoided its first women's basketball losing streak of the season by defeating Ouachita Baptist University 66-61 in Great American Conference play at Vining Arena in Arkadelphia on Saturday. The nationally 20th-ranked Golden Suns outscored Ouachita Baptist 19-4 over the final seven minutes of the opening period.

The Golden Suns and the Wonder Boys are in the midst of a string of three consecutive road doubleheaders. They will head to Southwestern Oklahoma State University for a twin bill in Weatherford on Thursday, Feb. 5, before making their return to Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Thursday, Feb. 12, for a doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

    Mike Balogun turned in a 19-point performance, while D.J. Jethroe and Branden Williams reached double figures off the bench with 15 and 12 points, respectively, but the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team was unable to overcome the stellar rebounding and hot shooting of Southern Arkansas , dropping a 109-80 decision to the Muleriders on Thursday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center. The Muleriders held a 63-35 advantage in rebounding, including a 21-6 advantage on the offensive glass that gave SAU a 32-2 advantage in second-chance points.
