    A pastor burning weeds right next to the building was the cause of a Friday night fire at The Door Christian Fellowship Church on Peterson Drive in Arenas Valley, said Silver City Fire Chief Milo Lambert. Lambert said the pastor had been burning weeds throughout the day right next to the building and there was a crack in stucco that let embers in.

    A former Grant County Sheriff's Deputy charged with domestic violence and other charges back in May who was sent to a treatment center in Las Cruces in August cut off an ankle bracelet, led police on a high speed chase and rammed a police car before being shot by a Silver City Police Officer. According to a news release from the New Mexico State Police, Michael Aguirre, 41, attacked his mother and stole her vehicle, a white 2002 Toyota 4-Runner, from Las Cruces at around 1:10 a.m. Thursday morning.

    Silver City and Grant County residents have another opportunity to let their opinions be known on the submissions for welcome signs the city has been considering since late last year. The town's Community Development Department has already held one open public meeting last week and will hold another at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the conference room on the second floor of the City Hall Annex, 1203 N. Hudson St. In this second round of submissions, 12 different people submitted designs, with one individual submitting 10 different versions of his design.

    Silver City residents and businesses will be receiving new recycling bins in the coming weeks, as the town of Silver City takes over recycling pickup from the Southwest Solid Waste Authority. Sometime in the next two weeks, downtown and area businesses will begin receiving their new blue, 450-gallon recycling bins, which will replace their old metal ones, said Terry Timme, a planner of recycling and special projects with the town's Office of Sustainability.
