The current law is seen as a deterrent to individuals convicted of minor drug crimes who try to secure employment or treatment following their release from prison.

    Former Blandford, Massachusetts Selectman Robert Nichols was fined $12,150.50 by the Massachusetts Ethics Commission for illegally steering town money to his own consultant firm after pretending another contractor was unavailable to do work for the town. In his capacity as a Selectman, Nichols misrepresented to his fellow Selectmen that the Town's engineering consultant, Tighe and Bond, was unavailable to repair a culvert and portion of Hiram Blair Road, and committed the Town to a contract with Berkshire Consulting, which he falsely described as his "former employer."
