    A suspect was shot by an Indiana State Police officer during an alleged robbery Monday morning at the Ricker's convenience store on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 53rd Street, according to police scanner traffic. Indiana State Police confirmed to The Herald Bulletin that shots had been fired but did not have any further information.

    Two recent crashes on the same road in Elkhart County highlight the dangers of distracted driving accidents involving motor vehicles and horse-drawn buggies. On May 29, a 17-year-old girl who rear-ended a buggy carrying an Amish couple and their 6-week-old baby on Indiana State Road 13 near County Road 34 told police that she got distracted and didn't see the buggy until it was too late to avoid the accident.

    All Ricker's Convenience Stores in Hamilton County north of Indianapolis have joined the "Safe Haven" initiative where identifying stickers in the store windows show victims of domestic violence they can seek help there. If someone feels they're in danger from domestic violence, they can go to one of the six locations, where employees are trained to call either 911 or the victim advocacy group Alternatives Inc. From there, they'll be transported to an emergency shelter.
