    The Altus High School girls' basketball team put up a good fight against the Elgin Lady Owls last Friday and heading into the fourth quarter, it appeared as if the Lady Bulldogs would upset Class 4A's seventh-ranked Lady Owls but things didn't quite fall Altus' way as Elgin escaped with a 49-47 victory. After falling behind 25-18 at the half, Altus surged in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 15 in the third to cut Elgin's deficit to four points.

    The Altus High School wrestling team hosted the Clinton Red Tornadoes on Tuesday and after an evening of hard fought battles, the Bulldogs came out on top 43 - 30. Out of the 14 matches that took place on Tuesday, the Bulldogs picked up eight wins, three by forfeit, while Clinton finished the night with six wins, two by forfeit. After having to forfeit the first two matches at 106 and 113 pounds, Altus ceded four additional points to the Red Tornadoes after Altus' Joseph Buxton lost to Clinton's Braeden Trent at 120 pounds by a 13-4 major decision.

    Local fired departments have put out small rangeland fires such as this one in a cotton field on Saturday, about six miles west of Altus that was estinguished by the Olustee and Martha rural fire departments. Jackson County has been in a county-issued burn ban since Monday, Jan. 22, and though winds are expected to pick up today responders at Altus Fire and Rescue have seen a slight improvement in structure and grass fires in the last week.

    With a $32,000 grant from PetSmart, Altus Animal Welfare Association has already sent 37 animals this month to OK Humane Place in Oklahoma City to be spayed or neutered through Altus Area Spay/Neuter Incentive Program at no cost to their owners. AAWA plans to spay/neuter 600 animals at no cost to their owners before January 2019 with the grant.
