Tigard, which ended a four-match losing streak with a 3-0 play-in win over Franklin, opened the state playoffs by scoring a 1-0 upset win over Aloha in a first-round playoff match held Saturday at Aloha High School.

    That's because the Aloha school serves large numbers of children with low family incomes and many who are still learning English, and for Hazeldale, following the script would have meant that the school's students finished in the lower tier when the results of statewide Smarter Balanced testing were released recently. Two-thirds of Hazeldale students proved that by the Smarter Balanced measure they are on track to graduate from high school ready for what the world has next, whether that means going to college or going to work.
