    Dec. 15--A former Bethlehem firefighter admitted Thursday in Lehigh County Court that he stole coffee and food totaling less than $8 from a convenience store while in uniform -- an offense for which he was later terminated, his attorney said.     Sept. 29--The state Supreme Court has sided with Emmaus firefighters in their quest to unionize, a ruling that could open the door for small municipal fire departments across the state to do the same. The state's high court on Tuesday denied the borough's appeal of a Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board decision that declared the firefighters employees because the borough pays them an hourly wage and controls their work schedule, hiring and discipline.

Smoke was reported at Independence Nursing Home on 1060 Park Ave. about 8 p.m. Firefighters found what appeared to be steam from a broken hot water line, but the damage did not allow for the immediate return of all residents.

    Savannah Dominick, 10, died at 7:25 a.m. Thursday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest's burn center, according to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office. Savannah's sister, 3-year-old Ashanti Hughes, died shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday, also in the burn center, officials said.
